Feral began as a purely personal document, which only the Author’s close friends and family would see. After beginning the manuscript, the Author decided that readers would benefit from a discussion of historical context, and he concluded that the existing literature, both fiction and non-fiction, did a poor job of preserving the meaning and purpose of many things. Since these were things that people fought and died for, the Author decided to create what, in his opinion, would be a more reliable chronicle. During that process, it was decided to make this story available to a wider audience. A principal theme of Feral is the conflict between free individuals and the state, or the collective. Feral is a tribute to the heroism and determination of those individuals that have resisted tyranny in the past, and those who currently resist. Feral is also an offering to those who will carry that struggle into the 21st century. The last half of the 20th century was in many ways defined by the struggle between communist-inspired absolutism, and the defenders of freedom. The aftermath of that struggle reveals a number of incongruities, including wars of independence that resulted in corrupt and ruthless dictatorships, freedom fighters that promote intrusive and coercive big government, the chronic failure of democracy to protect freedom, and the ongoing worldwide disintegration of individual liberty. The most incongruous development of all is the slide of the nation that led the west in this mighty struggle towards its own perverse form of absolutism. Public dialogue and media are dominated by the promotion and sale, by governments of all sizes and at all levels, of a soft slavery extolled for its peace, order, safety, forced equality, regulated life, and relief from personal responsibility. The state is determined that individuals buy into this rigidly managed utopia by surrendering, voluntarily or not, their natural rights and freedoms. It is a social contract of indentured servitude to the state. Feral was written in the light of this analysis, and is the story of a man who devotes his life to the struggle against the state, the chronicle of what he learns, and the price that he must pay. It is much easier to surrender to the increasing power of the collective. Fighting for a society of individual liberty and personal responsibility requires that you sacrifice much to even begin, and that you risk everything else to the outcome. The story includes an examination of what should have been learned from the 20th century wars of independence, and an analysis of those concepts for application to a renewed struggle. Feral is about the roots of those lessons-learned in the bush wars of the late 20th century, one man’s experiences in those wars, and his efforts to distill those lessons-learned and apply them now. The vision underlying the Legacy Trilogy is that these concepts, constituting a new science of insurrection, might even reverse the advance of authoritarianism in the great nation originally formed as mankind’s greatest experiment in freedom. FreePort, Book Two of the Legacy Trilogy, brings the new science of insurrection and resistance home. Book Three, to be entitled Beyond Leviathan, explores the ultimate development of that struggle.

As a member of the authors family, I was understandably apprehensive to read the book, as much of its content was unknown to me. I started the book Sunday night, and finished it the next day, unable to put it down. The book not only helped me understand more about the author, but it also helped me understand more about myself. The last several chapters were thrilling, and left me waiting very anxiously for the next book in the trilogy. As mentioned in the other reviews, the attention to detail, the fascination with politics and basic human needs, and the authors constant push to be a better person left me feeling inspired to be more of who I am supposed to be.An incredible read that needs to be passed around. Ever Darker, by the same author is of equal fascination, and another must read!
